1. What Is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a sport that originated in Japan in the 1970s and has since gained popularity around the world. It's a fun and challenging activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. One of the things that makes airsoft so appealing is the wide range of guns and equipment available. Players can choose from a variety of replica guns, including pistols, rifles, and shotguns, as well as different types of ammunition. This allows players to customize their experience and create their own unique play style.  Before you get alarmed, airsoft guns are toys and shoot plastic pellets at relatively low power for war games where people shoot at each other.  If you know what paintball is, then airsoft is very similar except that the projectiles are small round plastic pellets 6mm in diameter and weigh less than a pea.  Airsoft guns themselves look extremely real and appeal to the fantasy element that players yearn for.  If allows your children to play toy soldier with very realistic, albeit harmless, airsoft toys.

Airsoft can be a great bonding experience between parents and children

Airsoft can be played in a variety of settings, from backyard skirmishes to organized matches at dedicated fields or indoor arenas. These settings can offer different types of terrain and obstacles, which can make the games more challenging and exciting. There are a variety of game types that can be played in airsoft, and each one offers its own set of challenges and objectives.

Children learn about teamwork during game play

For example, in a game of Team Deathmatch, players are divided into teams and compete to eliminate the other team's players. In a game of Capture the Flag, players compete to capture the other team's flag while defending their own. In a game of King of the Hill, players compete to control a designated area and hold it for a certain amount of time. Airsoft requires players to work together as a team and develop strategic thinking skills. It's a great way to build confidence and improve communication skills. It also provides an opportunity for players to improve their physical fitness.

2. What Skills Can Children Develop While Playing Airsoft?

While some may view airsoft as just a game, it can be a great way for children to develop valuable life skills and learn important lessons. If your child has already experienced paintball, then you will already know that airsoft provides the same benefits and learning.  One of the most important skills that children can learn while playing airsoft is teamwork. Airsoft is a team-based game, and players must work together to achieve their objectives. By playing airsoft, children can learn how to communicate effectively with their teammates, work towards a common goal, and support one another. These skills can be valuable both on and off the field, helping children to work effectively in groups and contribute positively to their communities.

Climbing, jumping, scaling, dodging, crouching – lots of exercise!

Airsoft is also a great form of exercise, which can help children to develop physical fitness and endurance. Running, jumping, and crawling are all part of the game, and playing airsoft can help children to build strength, improve their cardiovascular health, and develop coordination and agility. By staying active and engaging in physical activity, children can also develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.  Airsoft also motivates them to get out of the house instead of playing video games all day while sitting on a couch.

Kids learn about teamwork and develop self-esteem.

Playing airsoft is a great way for children to connect with others and make new friends. By playing in a team-based environment, children can meet new people and develop strong relationships with their fellow players. These relationships can be important for building social skills, developing confidence, and creating a sense of belonging.  It also teaches them about winning and losing, and about sportsmanship.

Airsoft is a game that requires strategy and problem-solving skills. Players must analyze the situation, come up with a plan, and work together to execute it successfully. By playing airsoft, children can develop critical thinking skills, learn how to make decisions under pressure and develop their problem-solving abilities. These skills can be valuable in many areas of life, including school, work, and personal relationships.

Kids can make new friends in Airsoft

While airsoft may seem like just a game, it can be a great way for children to develop important life skills. Through teamwork, physical fitness, socialization, strategy, and problem-solving, children can learn valuable lessons that can help them succeed both on and off the field. If you're looking for a fun and engaging activity for your child, consider introducing them to the world of airsoft.

People of all ages can enjoy Airsoft at the same time.

3. Does Airsoft Hurt?

Airsoft can cause some pain, but it's generally considered to be less painful than paintball. The guns used in airsoft shoot small plastic pellets called BBs, which can sting or leave small welts on the skin when they hit. However, these pellets are not designed to cause any serious injury or harm. To reduce the risk of injury, players are required to wear protective gear like goggles and masks to protect their eyes and face. This gear helps to minimize the impact of the BBs and prevent them from causing any serious harm.

Getting shot on bare skin can leave welts so its best to cover up

It's important to note that the level of pain experienced during an airsoft game can vary depending on several factors, including the type of gun being used, the distance between players, and the type of protective gear being worn. However, most players find that the pain is minimal and that the adrenaline rush of the game makes it more exciting than painful.  Read our extended article on do airsoft guns hurt.

While airsoft can cause some pain, it's generally considered to be a safe and fun activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. The small pain disincentivizes players from getting shot and makes the game more exciting.  As with any sport, it's important to follow proper safety guidelines and wear appropriate protective gear to minimize the risk of injury.  For players who really cannot stand any pain or sting from getting shot, simply wear more clothing.  A loose-fitting thick sweatshirt will practically block out 90% of any feeling of getting shot.  If you have the budget, make sure to get your kids some gloves too.  They’ll thank you for it.

Gloves will protect delicate fingers from getting shot, which can sting.

4. Is Airsoft Illegal?

No, airsoft is not illegal. It's a recreational activity that is legal in most countries, including the United States, Canada, the UK, most of continental Europe, some parts of Latin America, and parts of the middle east and Asia. However, there may be certain laws and regulations that govern the use of airsoft guns, depending on where you live.

For example, in the United States, there are federal laws that require all airsoft guns to have an orange tip on the barrel to indicate that it's not a real firearm. If you live in California, then colored tape needs to be affixed to the trigger guard, grip and potentially other parts of the airsoft gun.  For airsoft laws by state in the US, read this blog article about airsoft gun laws by state.   In the UK if you don’t have a UKARA membership you can only buy a gun that is 2-tone (an airsoft gun that is 51% covered in a bright color i.e. green, red, or orange). Some states and localities may have additional laws that require players to be a certain age or to obtain a permit before participating in airsoft games.  To learn more about the legality of airsoft in the UK, read our blog article about Airsoft in the UK.

Headwear not only keeps your child warm but also provides some extra padding against BB hits.  A hoodie will work equally well.

It's important to research the laws and regulations in your area before participating in airsoft to ensure that you're following all the necessary rules and guidelines. While there may be certain laws and regulations that govern the use of airsoft guns, it's generally legal and widely enjoyed as a recreational activity.

Bright colors on airsoft guns are required in some countries to immediately identify them as toys.

5. How Much Does Airsoft Cost?

Airsoft guns can range in price from very cheap to very, very expensive, depending on the quality of the gun and the features it offers. Cheaper guns can be found for as little as $20-$30, but these are often low-quality and may not perform well. On the other hand, high-end guns can cost several hundred dollars or more. If you're just starting in airsoft, a good starting gun can cost around $150. This will give you a decent-quality gun that will perform well and hold up over time.

Most people start out with an electric powered airsoft gun because they are relatively simple to operate and are reliable.  In addition to the gun itself, you'll also need to purchase additional equipment such as BBs, batteries, and face protection. BBs can be purchased in bulk for relatively cheap, but you'll need to factor in the cost of replacing them regularly as BBs cannot be reused.  They deform or chip on impact, so feeding used BBs through your airsoft gun can damage the delicate internals.  Batteries can also be purchased for relatively cheap, but you may need to purchase a battery charger as well. Face protection is a crucial part of airsoft and should not be overlooked. A decent quality mask or goggles can cost anywhere from $20-$50, depending on the level of protection and comfort you're looking for.  High end masks that offer maximum protection and style can go upwards of $100.  Read this article for recommendations on the best airsoft masks, or the best airsoft goggles

We recommend full face protection.

The cost of airsoft can add up quickly, but it's possible to get started with a total budget of approximately $200-$250. As you become more involved in the sport, you may want to invest in additional equipment like a full airsoft outfit, or higher-end guns, but it's not necessary to do so to enjoy airsoft.  Do keep in mind that airsoft guns are toys and they will require maintenance and repairs with extended use.  So don’t be surprised if your child tells you after a few months that their airsoft gun needs repairs.  Most electric airsoft guns will shoot anywhere from 20,000 – 50,000 rounds without requiring any repairs if they are used properly and maintained well.  Read our blog article on how to clean and maintain airsoft guns.  Still worried about cost?  Then read our extended article on how much does airsoft really cost.  If you are on a budget, then read our article that covers the best cheap airsoft guns.

Full custom airsoft guns can be very expensive.

There are airsoft shops all over the world.

It's also important to consider the type of gun you're looking for and the level of play you're interested in. If you're just starting, a basic gun may be all you need, but if you're looking for more advanced play, you may want to invest in a higher-end gun with more features and capabilities. Overall, buying an airsoft gun can be a fun and exciting experience, but it's important to do your research and choose a reputable seller to ensure you're getting a quality product.  Still unsure?  Read our blog about how to choose a starter gun, or what airsoft gun should I get?

7. How To Stay Safe When Using Airsoft Guns

Staying safe when using airsoft guns is very important. Here are some basic tips to help you stay safe when participating in airsoft games:

1. Wear protective gear
Always wear protective gear like goggles and a mask to protect your eyes and face. This will help prevent serious injury, especially if you're hit in the face or eyes.

2. Treat the gun like a real firearm
Always treat your airsoft gun like it's a real firearm. Never point it at anyone or anything you don't intend to shoot, and always keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot.

3. Use common sense
Use common sense when playing airsoft. Don't shoot at people who are not wearing protective gear, don't shoot at animals, and don't shoot at anything that could cause damage or injury.

4. Follow the rules
Follow the rules and regulations of the airsoft field or arena you're playing at. These rules are designed to keep everyone safe and ensure a fun and fair game.

5. Don't modify your gun
Don't modify your airsoft gun in any way that could make it more dangerous or cause it to malfunction. Stick to the manufacturer's guidelines and use the gun as intended.

6. Never display or discharge your airsoft gun in public
Always transport your airsoft gun in a bag or the box it came with and never take it out in a public place as it could be mistaken for a real firearm.  In countries where real guns are prevalent, police could mistake an airsoft gun for a real gun.  The consequences could be very serious.

By following these basic safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable airsoft experience for yourself and those around you.

8.  How Old Do You Need To Be To Play Airsoft?

The minimum age to play airsoft can vary depending on the location and the rules of the specific field or arena. In many places, players must be at least 18 years old to play airsoft without adult supervision. However, some fields or arenas may allow younger players to participate with adult supervision or with a signed waiver from their parent or legal guardian.

Most airsoft guns are not powerful enough to blind, but always wear safety glasses anyways.

It's important to check the rules and regulations of the specific field or arena you're interested in playing at to determine the minimum age requirement. In addition, it's always a good idea to discuss airsoft safety and guidelines with your parent or guardian before participating in any games.  To learn more, read our article on how old to play airsoft: a guide for parents and kids.

Wearing properly fitted protective gear is very important.

9. Use Common Sense

Airsoft is a popular recreational activity that involves using replica toy guns to play various games and scenarios. While airsoft can be a lot of fun, it's important to use common sense and follow some basic guidelines to ensure safety for everyone involved. One of the most important things to remember is to be aware of how your child will look to other people as they are holding what appears to be a gun.  Teach them never to show their airsoft guns in public places or to play in areas where they could be misconstrued to be using real guns.  This is really the MOST important things of all to teach your kids before you send them out into the world with an airsoft gun.  And they should NEVER take an airsoft gun to school.  They should also be taught NEVER to try and threaten anyone with an airsoft gun, or point it at anyone outside of a gaming environment.  In some countries, shooting somebody with an airsoft gun without their consent can be construed as assault.

Shooting at someone who is not wearing protective gear can be dangerous and cause serious injury. Before starting any games, make sure that everyone has the necessary safety equipment.

Airsoft is a lot of fun, as long as common sense is used.

Another important aspect of airsoft safety is being mindful of what you're shooting at. Shooting at animals or anything that could cause damage or injury, such as windows, cars, or other people's property, is not only dangerous but also unnecessary and can cause harm. Keep airsoft guns away from pets and wildlife, and make sure you're only shooting at appropriate targets. Shooting at animals in some countries can get your child arrested for animal cruelty.  And of course, remind them not to shoot their siblings for fun!

If they are not using your airsoft gun, it is best to remove the magazine and batteries from their airsoft gun to prevent accidents.

Unplug the batteries when the airsoft gun is not in use.

Your child may choose to play airsoft games in the forest, abandoned buildings, caves and other natural terrain.  Sometimes these can be dangerous.  Dilapidated buildings may no longer have safety railings to prevent people falling from height.  There may be sharp branches and rocks outdoors that can cause serious injury.  Teach your child to be careful and not to take unnecessary risks.  Tell them to watch where they are going and always be aware of their surroundings.  Winning is not the most important; getting home safely after a game without injury should be their top priority.

Airsoft is often played outside in unknown terrains so teach your kids to be careful.

By using common sense and following these basic guidelines, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable airsoft experience for yourself and those around you.

10.  Be Careful with Batteries, Gas And C02 Capsules

It's important to understand the potential dangers and take steps to prevent accidents and injuries. In particular, it's crucial to understand how batteries, gas, and CO2 can pose risks if not handled properly. Lipo Batteries are a common power source for airsoft guns. Most Lipo batteries used in airsoft guns are rechargeable, and they can provide a reliable source of power for hours of gameplay. However, overcharging batteries can be a serious hazard. If a battery is left plugged in for too long or if the charging device is defective, the battery can become extremely hot and even catch fire. Lithium-ion batteries are particularly prone to this issue.

n’t be tempted to get low quality batteries which could be fire hazards.

To prevent overcharging, it's important to use a high-quality charger and never leave a battery charging unattended. It's also a good idea to check the battery periodically during charging to ensure that it's not overheating, or invest in a Lipo battery bag to store them in.

A Lipo-Safe bag can control a battery fire.

Gas is another power source used in airsoft guns, especially gas-powered pistols, and rifles. The pressurized gas is typically stored in small canisters and is used to propel the BBs out of the gun. While gas-powered guns can be fun to use and provide a realistic shooting experience, they do come with some risks. For example, leaving a canister in a hot car or exposing it to direct sunlight can cause the pressure inside to increase, leading to an explosion. Green gas used for airsoft guns is essentially propane and is therefore flammable.  It is important to keep green gas away from open flames or other heat sources. It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when using a gas canister and to store canisters in a cool, dry place.

Green gas is mainly comprised of flammable propane, so handle with care.

CO2 is a type of gas that can also be used in airsoft guns. CO2 capsules are popular among airsoft enthusiasts because they can hold a lot of pressure, which can provide a powerful shooting experience. However, like other types of gas, CO2 canisters can be dangerous if not handled properly. CO2 canisters can explode if they are exposed to high temperatures or if they are punctured or damaged. Additionally, if the CO2 canister is not installed correctly in the gun, it can cause the gun to malfunction or even fire out of the gun unexpectedly. Attempting to remove CO2 capsules from an airsoft gun before they are fully expended is also extremely dangerous and can result in metal capsule rocketing out of the gun and striking someone in the face and causing serious injury or death.  To prevent accidents, it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when installing a CO2 canister and to store canisters in a cool, dry place.  Teach your children to use batteries, gas and CO2 properly before allowing them to use these items unattended.

CO2 capsules are extremely pressurized and can be dangerous if mishandled.

11. Transporting Airsoft Guns

It's important to know how to transport it safely. While airsoft guns are not real firearms, they can look very similar and can cause confusion or concern if they are not handled properly. In this article, we will discuss some tips for transporting airsoft guns safely.

Invest in a proper gun bag to store and transport your child’s airsoft gun

First and foremost, it's important to keep your airsoft gun out of sight and out of reach of others when transporting it. This means that it should be stored securely in a gun case or bag that is designed to hold airsoft guns. A gun case will not only protect your airsoft gun from damage but will also prevent others from seeing it and mistaking it for a real firearm. Before transporting your airsoft gun, make sure that it is unloaded so that there are no BBs in the chamber, as well as removing the battery or any gas inside. You should also separate the gun from the magazine when transporting it to further reduce the risk of an accidental discharge.

A backpack can be used to carry other accessories like gas, batteries, BBs and gear.

It's also important to be aware of the laws in your area regarding the transportation of airsoft guns. Some areas may have specific requirements for how airsoft guns should be transported, or where they should be stored in your vehicle. For example, some areas may require that airsoft guns be transported in a locked container or in the trunk of a car.

A more expensive padded hard carrying case offers even more protection.

When transporting your airsoft gun, it's important to always treat it with respect and to handle it responsibly. Remember, airsoft guns can be mistaken for real firearms, and any mishandling or misuse can lead to serious consequences. Always keep your airsoft gun out of sight, unloaded, and securely stored in a gun case or bag. Also, be sure to follow any local laws or regulations regarding airsoft gun transportation.  Keeping airsoft guns protected during storage also prevents dust and other harmful household products from entering and corroding the delicate internals of an airsoft gun.

12. Where Should Airsoft Be Played?

It's important to play airsoft only in places where it is safe to do so, such as airsoft fields or other designated areas. Playing airsoft in public places or on private property without permission can be dangerous and may result in legal issues.  Remind your kids never to trespass into someone else’s property to play airsoft.

Airsoft fields, either indoors or outdoors, are the safest and most fun places to play airsoft.

One of the best places to play airsoft is an airsoft field. Airsoft fields are specifically designed for airsoft games and are equipped with the necessary safety measures to ensure that everyone involved is safe. Airsoft fields typically have a range of game scenarios and terrain types to choose from, making them a great option for players who want to experience different types of games.

Airsoft fields of various styles exist in many different countries.  Try searching on Google Maps for an “airsoft field” near you.

If you don't have access to an airsoft field, you can still play airsoft in a safe and controlled environment at home. However, it's important to make sure that you are playing within the boundaries of your property and that you have the permission of any neighbors who may be affected by the noise or activity. Playing airsoft in public spaces or on someone else's property without permission can be dangerous and may result in legal issues.

Setting up simple targets for shooting at home is safe and easy.

Airsoft should only be played in places where it is safe to do so. This includes designated airsoft fields or other safe and controlled environments. Playing airsoft in public spaces or on private property without permission can be dangerous and may result in legal issues. By playing airsoft games in safe environments and taking the necessary safety precautions, players can enjoy this exciting activity while minimizing the risk of injury or harm.

13. Will Airsoft turn my child into a gun criminal?

There is no evidence to suggest that playing with airsoft guns or shooting video games, as some people surmise, would lead to violent tendencies.  Airsoft is a fantasy sport with toy guns where children or even grown men shoot at each other in a competitive nature.  We have been playing airsoft ourselves for over 25 years even before our founding in 1998, and nobody in our community has been known to move onto becoming violent gun criminals.  There may be individuals who by nature are already violent, but airsoft is not going to turn otherwise normal people into criminals.  It is a fantasy, and a safe and legal channel for people interested in guns to pursue their hobby.  It is however important to educate your child not to use airsoft guns in a threatening manner that may suggest to others that they are brandishing a real weapon, which would be dangerous and carry serious legal consequences.

FINAL THOUGHTS FOR PARENTS WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT LETTING THEIR KIDS PLAY AIRSOFT

Airsoft is a thrilling and engaging activity that can provide a range of benefits for children and teenagers. By playing airsoft, children can develop important life skills such as teamwork, physical fitness, socialization, and strategy and problem-solving. However, parents need to understand that airsoft guns are not toys and should be treated with respect and caution. Parents should ensure that their children are playing airsoft in safe environments, such as airsoft fields or other designated areas, and that they are wearing appropriate safety gear. By taking these precautions, parents can help their children enjoy the many benefits of airsoft while minimizing the risk of injury or harm. With the right guidance and support, airsoft can be a fun and rewarding activity for children and teenagers alike.
