IS TOKYO MARUI GOOD?
Tokyo Marui is the best brand in Airsoft. For those who also dabble in radio controlled model, Tokyo Marui is the Tamiya of the Airsoft world, leading the world in innovation and technology.Read more...
While other brands have come up with innovations of their own, Tokyo Marui airsoft guns make major breakthroughs and have continued to do so in many areas. We explain the different kinds of airsoft guns that Tokyo Marui has to offer.
Tokyo Marui Spring Pistol
Tokyo Marui makes some of the best spring pistols around thanks to their passionate pursuit of realism even on an affordable airsoft gun. Despite being full plastic, Tokyo Marui spring pistols look quite realistic and offer great value for money, with good power and range. While a little light to hold in your hand, they offer great performance for shooting at home. You cock the slide each time before you shoot.
Tokyo Marui EBB Pistol
If you don’t want to have to cock the slide every time to shoot on a spring pistol, the Electric Blowback Pistol is one step up and offers semi-auto shooting. A small gearbox inside the gun that is powered by AAA batteries stored inside the pistol grip will wind up the spring and shoot for you everytime you pull the trigger, so you don’t have to cock the gun yourself. EBB pistols are for casual shooting and are relatively low power, coming in at less than a spring pistol. If you want an electric pistol that you can actually skirmish with, consider an AEP pistol.
Tokyo Marui Automatic Electric Pistol (AEP)
Tokyo Marui invented the Tokyo Marui AEP, or Automatic Electric Pistol, which minimizes the AEG gearbox concept into a pistol body. Our online store classifies them under Electric Airsoft Pistols, which also includes the much cheaper and lower powered EBBs.
Tokyo Marui Non Blowback Pistol (NBB)
While GBB pistols are by far the most popular, Tokyo Marui offers a few non-blowback pistols where the slide is fixed and does not cycle. The benefits of NBB pistols is much greater gas efficiency, much quieter, and more power and accuracy. The Tokyo Marui MK23 SOCOM fixed slide full set gas pistol is extremely popular for players wanting stealth, and it’s high power and amazing range even allows players to snipe with it. Yes, Tokyo Marui has single-handedly made sniping with a pistol possible. Due to the limited number of NBB pistols in Airsoft, we classify NBB pistols together in the Gas Airsoft Pistol category.
Tokyo Marui Gas Blowback Pistol (GBB)
Tokyo Marui has led with their gas blowback pistol design since the 2000’s that many pistols today are based on. In particular, the Tokyo Marui Hi Capa 5.1 Gold Match is one of the most popular airsoft pistols in the world. The Tokyo Marui Desert Eagle, the Tokyo Marui MK23, Tokyo Marui P226, Tokyo Marui Hi Capa 4.3, Tokyo Marui Hi-Capa 5.1 Stainless GBB pistol, Tokyo Marui 1911, Tokyo Marui Vorpal Bunny, the full auto Tokyo Marui Xtreme 45 and the Tokyo Marui Biohazard Resident Evil Samurai Edge Albert.W.Model 1 are just a few of the most popular airsoft pistols from Tokyo Marui.
Tokyo Marui Revolvers
A very limited range of Tokyo Marui revolvers is available, although admittedly this is not their focus and the options are rather basic. If you are looking for a airsoft revolver, then the best options are from Tanaka, WinGun, ASG, Marushin, and BO Manufacture. If money is no object, consider the ultra high end Airsoft Surgeon revolvers.
Tokyo Marui Automatic Electric Guns (AEG)
The company has defined industry standards since the birth of the Electric gun (AEG) in the mid 1980’s. The term AEG actually refers to AEG rifles or AEG submachine guns (SMG) in particular and is not used to describe their pistols or shotguns, even though there are electric versions of those as well. Their AEG line has continued to evolve into present day with the Tokyo Marui Next Generation Recoil Shock system that generates recoil in an electric gun, including the popular Tokyo Marui HK416 Delta Black, the limited edition collectible generally referred to as the Tokyo Marui Pink P90, the entire collection of the Tokyo Marui M4 AEG rifle, Tokyo Marui SCAR AEG rifle, and the Tokyo Marui AK AEG rifles.
Tokyo Marui Shotguns
They also lead the way in innovation for the airsoft shotgun category, and have long set the standard with their pump action shotguns like the Tokyo Marui SPAS 12 and the Tokyo Marui M3 Benelli. Even more impressive are their gas powered shotguns like the Tokyo Marui KSG and Tokyo Marui M870, and their mind blowing electric shotguns including the Tokyo Marui AA12 and Tokyo Marui SGR-12 which can pump out 6 BBs per trigger pull in full auto. Tokyo Marui is the only company to make electric full auto shotguns.
Tokyo Marui Sniper
Tokyo Marui VSR 10 is no doubt the gold standard by which all airsoft sniper rifles are measured against, and while high performance manufacturers like Silverback and Novritsch make better sniper rifles for a much higher price, you cannot get better value for your money with a basic VSR 10 or a more premium Tokyo Marui VSR 10 G Spec that you have the option of upgrading to higher performance levels as your budget allows. The Tokyo Marui M40A5 is the premium bolt action option.
Tokyo Marui Gas Blowback Rifle (GBBR)
And finally, Tokyo Marui MWS system continues to lead the gas blowback rifle sector with its solid recoil, power consistency and efficiency. The Tokyo Marui M4A1 MWS GBBR gas blowback rifle competes head-on with high performance gas blowback rifles from GHK and VFC, perhaps edging out the two latter brands in terms of cold weather performance but losing out a bit on field-stripping realism. The Tokyo Marui MK18 MOD 1 GBB rifle is very popular.
Other Facts About Tokyo Marui
Tokyo Marui is best known for their accuracy, thanks for an amazing hop up unit and hop up bucking. The super materials used and the precision fittings makes their accuracy difficult to match by other brands in the same price category. Tokyo Marui guns are reliable and excellent performers, with top build quality because they are completely made in Japan. However, this also introduces two limitations to Tokyo Marui airsoft guns.
Firstly, Japanese law prohibits the sale of full metal airsoft pistols so Tokyo Marui airsoft pistols are primarily plastic. The get-around for this is a huge aftermarket of metal slides that you can upgrade and change out if you prefer metal. Having said that, Tokyo Marui uses very high quality plastic that is sometimes laced with metal to offer a heavier feel. If having a metal gun is important to you, then plan on upgrading exterior parts. Some people ask if they should just get a full metal gun from another brand instead. We believe that the internal engine of the gun is much more important for accuracy and reliability, so we always recommend players who are willing to tinker and upgrade to get a Tokyo Marui first, and then upgrade parts from there over time. It is also a rewarding journey to see how each upgrade part can elevate the performance of your gun. Buying a full metal gun, which may often be simply die-cast pot metal, from another brand which has infeior internals can leave you ending up with a full metal brick that doesn’t do any good on the field. Luckily, the Japanese legal plastic requirement does not apply to rifles, which are allowed to be made in full metal.
The second shortcoming is Japan’s legal power limits of 0.98joules (around 300fps using 0.2g BBs). While about average for an airsoft pistol, this is low by most standards for airsoft rifles and snipers. The good news is upgrading power on electric rifles and spring powered sniper rifles is extremely easy, and we have a vast library of parts to make it interesting.
In summary, Tokyo Marui is really good. It is the brand with the most models on offer, and enjoys the largest number of aftermarket upgrade parts. If you are looking to get an airsoft gun that you can tinker with and grow with your abilities, then Tokyo Marui is one of the main brands you should consider.
HOW TO UPGRADE A TOKYO MARUI PISTOL?
If you are interested in upgrading your airsoft gun, then starting with a Tokyo Marui gun is the best choice. Because Tokyo Marui is the brand that enjoys the largest aftermarket upgrade parts library of any brand. For upgrading pistols, we would recommend starting with installing a more high quality precision inner barrel for tighter air seal.Read more...
For barrels, we love da Vinci of Japan, which is produced by the head engineer who used to make the legendary PDI inner barrels. While the Tokyo Marui hop up bucking is already very good quality, slight gains in distance can be achieved by upgrading the hop up bucking. For hop up, we like A Plus Airsoft and Maple Leaf. A Plus Airsoft offers the integrated hop up rubber with precision barrel for Tokyo Marui pistols that is an interesting concept and delivers superior range. Other things to consider are the gas nozzle which delivers air flow to the BB. Upgrading to a better nozzle with larger air flow can increase the power of your pistol. But there is a limit on how powerful Tokyo Marui gas blowback pistols can be upgraded, and moving from the factory 300fps to a 340fps - 350fps is already quite a big jump. A longer inner barrel will make the best gains since it would provide more opportunity for the BB to accelerate before it leaves the gun. Some players install a threaded outer barrel on their pistol and attach a mock suppressor, and then install a very long inner barrel that extends past the outer barrel and all the way out to the end of the mock suppressor. This trick can usually generate some significant power gains.
Check out performance parts from Nineball airsoft parts, COWCOW Technology airsoft parts, Airsoft Masterpiece airsoft parts, da Vinci precision airsoft inner barrels, Dynamic Precision airsoft parts, Edge airsoft parts, Guarder, Guns Modify, and Maple Leaf. If you want to upgrade metal body components, then check out Gunsmith Bros airsoft parts. We’ve only listed the most notable brands with the larger library of parts, but there are numerous brands on our website that offer unique parts that we have not mentioned above.
Unfortunately there are very limited upgrade parts available for spring pistols, EBB pistols or AEP pistols. Tokyo Marui’s gas pistol range enjoys the most upgrade potential by far.
Disclaimer: Before upgrading your gun, be sure to check local laws to ensure you do not exceed regulated power limits. In some countries, upgrading you airsoft gun beyond legal limits would make you criminally liable for possession of a firearm. We do not recommend or support upgrading any airsoft gun beyond legal limits, and will not be held liable for any crinimal activity from such acts. We provide information to readers on how to upgrade airsoft guns within the legal limit.

While Tokyo Marui’s Glock 17 is very high quality, the official licensed Glock airsoft pistols from Umarex offer comparable performance with a lot more features and realism. One thing to note is that the Tokyo Marui Glock 17 is actually wider than the real Glock 17 pistol, with slight differences in dimensions that make it unusable in a real Glock 17 holster. By contrast, the officially licensed Umarex Glock 17 airsoft pistols are correctly sized and do fit real Glock 17 holsters and accessories. Umarex Glock pistols manufactured by VFC are also cross compatible with Tokyo Marui Glock magazines in many cases.
If you are interested in a Glock 17 airsoft pistol, then consider the Umarex Glock 17 Gen 3 airsoft pistol made by GHK. It is the most realistic Glock 17 Airsoft pistol available.
HOW MUCH DO TOKYO MARUI AIRSOFT GUNS COST?
The price of Tokyo Marui airsoft guns can vary, starting with spring and electric powered airsoft pistols starting well below $50. Tokyo Marui offers a BOYS line of scaled down electric rifles to pre-teen shooters for under $100.Read more...
Moving up beyond the $100 mark will open you up to the vast library of gas blowback pistols, which offer the most bang for the buck. Engaging and fun, gas blowback pistols will need to run on HFC134a or Green Gas.
If you’re looking for a sniper rifle, then that will start at around $160 onwards. Tokyo Marui AEG rifles will cost more than $200, with the more advanced Next Generation Recoil Shock (NGRS) series costing more than $400. If you are interested in a gas blowback rifle, then the Tokyo Marui MWS (ZET System) GBBR rifles will cost in excess of $500. Their impressive line of electric shotguns is also in this price range.
If budget is no issue, then consider the range topping Tokyo Marui MK46 MOD 0 AEG machine gun.
No matter what your budget is, Tokyo Marui has an airsoft gun for you. But the true joy of owning a Tokyo Marui gun, especially the electric rifles, gas pistols, and spring powered snipers, is their endless upgrade options offered by various third party brands.
