The updated SAP-180 Gen 2 upper receiver design was introduced to the real steel community in 2020, offering a distinctive alternative to the saturated AR-15 market. As a spiritual successor to Eugene Stoner's AR-180, the SAP-180 integrates modern enhancements tailored to contemporary shooters' requirements, including a buffer tube-less system that allows for firing with the stock folded, and a flush M-LOK handguard for mounting various accessories. It is compatible with any mil-spec AR-15 or BRN-180 ready lower receivers.
Salvo Precision has faithfully replicated the SAP-180 as a GBB rifle, employing the renowned Tokyo Marui MWS system for its internals, ensuring a high-quality GBB experience. The rifle features a 10.5-inch Gen 2 handguard with six M-LOK sections, minimising weight while enabling the installation of various peripheral devices. A monolithic Picatinny upper allows for optics mounting. Unique to the handguard is a single removable screw for easy disassembly. At the front, a retro three-pronged flash hider can be removed to accommodate other 14mm CCW muzzle devices or tracer units.
The SAP-180 upper receiver showcases a distinctive motorbike charging handle design, a key feature that contributes to the rifle's unique profile, allowing for an AK-style bolt charging action, with the SAP dust cover unfolds as the bolt cycles. The lower utilises an SAP-180-style receiver, featuring traditional single-sided fire controls, providing familiarity with the selector, bolt release, and magazine catch, with the ability to swap out the mag release and fire selector with MWS spec. ambi controls, providing an alternative for shooters to use a full ambidextrous SAP-180. The rear of the rifle includes a Picatinny stock rail interface, enabling shooters to easily swap Picatinny stocks to suit their shooting configuration. Salvo includes a minimalistic folding stock with an integrated rubberised buttpad, enhancing comfort and recoil absorption. Its low-profile design optimises compatibility with lower-profile optics, further improving shooting comfort. Additionally, the stock is equipped with a rear ambidextrous QD sling point for direct attachment of a two-point sling. The hinge mechanism allows for height adjustment to accommodate the shooter's preferences, and it can be folded for compact storage during transport or for improved control in confined spaces, with the option to fold either to the right or left.
At its core, the rifle features a short-stroked SCX bolt system, incorporating a compact SAP-style steel bolt with a titanium-coated surface on a guided track, enhanced by springs and rollers for a quick and smooth bolt cycle. This design facilitates the attachment of Picatinny-based stocks, resulting in a shorter yet adequate recoil experience when firing the SCX, and allows for operation even with the stock folded. The SAP includes an integrated hop-up base with the outer barrel, ensuring minimal wobble of the hop-up rubber and inner barrel for consistent accuracy. An adjustable hop dial, located above the bolt, provides tactile feedback during adjustments. The trigger box utilises an SCX trigger box with commonly worn components reinforced with steel for extended durability, with the ability to switch out components with Tokyo Marui MWS spec. aftermarket components. The rifle offers Safe-Semi-Auto fire modes on a curved trigger, delivering an enjoyable shooting experience with a short wall break and quick reset.
This deluxe edition of the SAP-180 is constructed using premier processes, including CNC machining of aluminium billet for its housing, with an anodised surface and QPQ steel components, resulting in a reliable and sturdy rifle suitable for extensive use in intense situations. The processes used to build this deluxe rifle include;
- Upper Receiver: CNC Aluminum Extrusion + Anodising
- Lower Receiver: CNC Aluminum Billet + Anodising
- Handguard: CNC Aluminum Extrusion + Anodising
- Muzzle & Outer Barrel: QPQ Treated Steel
- Bolt Carrier: Titanium Coated Stainless Steel
- Charging Handle Crank Handle: Steel
- Trigger Box: CNC Aluminium Housing with Steel Reinforced Components
- Stock: CNC Aluminium Stock w/ Cast Steel Hinge
Salvo Precision dedicates its efforts to listening to customer feedback to continually enhance product quality. In this instance, they have addressed the concerns raised regarding their first-generation rifles and implemented improvements in the Gen 2 rifle, to which, they?ve also applied to the SAP-180. The Gen 2 now features a reciprocating spring buffer pad in its lower receiver for better recoil absorption and bolt travel, alongside a revised barrel clamp design to rectify barrel wobble and accuracy issues. They recommend applying blue loctite to the barrel clamp screws during reassembly if the rifle is disassembled. The hop-up chamber base mount structure has also been redesigned for a more stable and secure assembly of the outer barrel and hop-up. Salvo advises verifying the two top bolt screws for security after every few games (or after each game) to prevent damage to the bolt, and suggests applying blue loctite to these screws for better security. Additionally, for those using Tokyo Marui MWS STANAG GBB magazines, Salvo recommends swapping either the feed lips of the magazine or the nozzle to Guns Modify for consistent feeding and reduced risk of damage. As a deluxe rifle, the standard bolt is built using a titanium coated stainless steel bolt to enhance the overall felt recoil experience of the rifle, along with enhancing the bolts durability in the long run.
