The M4 / AR-15 style electric airsoft rifle, if you have been playing airsoft for any given amount of time, you would have seen many versions of it. Heck, you may even own a few to realize that they are mostly the same thing, an external that could resemble any AR15 / M4 style rifle of your choosing with a soulless version 2 gearbox running it. Sure, it's a tried and true system, with a lot of ways to customize it to make it your own, but one thing it could never be is realistic. The more educated bunch would say that the Systema PTW system, the GBLS DAS system, and even the Tokyo Marui Next Generation Recoil Shock (NGRS) system are realistic, and some are even used by law enforcement or military agencies to use as training tools, that's good and all but those are not cheap, a Systema or GBLS gun could cost more than $1000, that's an arm and a leg for some people, or simply is too proprietary and cannot handle high FPS output like the NGRS system by Tokyo Mauri. So, is the M4 AEG perfected, is there nothing that could be done to make it better? Well, G&G says "Game On!"
G&G is a well-established airsoft company that is not afraid to try new things, they gave us the lightweight "pistol caliber" carbine, the G&G ARP9, and the speedsoft-oriented airsoft electric rifle, the G&G SSG-1 AEG, and many more groundbreaking airsoft guns that we can't list all here simply because of how many there are. You might be thinking, this looks like another M4 or AR15 style rifle, what is special about the G&G SGR 556 electric airsoft rifle? While externally, it has everything a modern M4-style AEG would have such as a 14mm CCW threaded barrel for attachment of different muzzle devices such as tracers and suppressors, an M-Lok railed handguard allowing for attachments such as flashlights, lasers, PEQ boxes, and grips as well as a monolithic Picatinny top rail allows for different optic options such as LPVOs, red dot sights and so on. Other than being modular, allowing for attachments of all kinds, it also has an ambidextrous fire selector, QD sling slots, and a nice retractable butt stock that is easy to adjust, and it feels solid on the shoulder when shouldering, speaking of feeling solid, this rifle's build quality is superb with no rattles and wobbles, which is expected from a top tier airsoft brand like G&G.
So that is all great and all, but what is special, what makes this more realistic than other AEGs? Well, the key is inside, the G&G SGR 556 electric airsoft gun, is not just a new airsoft rifle, but it also introduces the brand new G&G G3 gearbox system. The G3 gearbox by G&G is a revolutionary step for airsoft as we know it, the G3 gearbox is a split gearbox design, allowing you to take the G&G SGR 556 as you would on a Systema PTW or a real steel firearm as the upper and lower receiver can be separated completely. Speaking of PTW similarities, the G&G SGR 556 has a last-round cut-off function, thanks to the IR sensor in the chamber, allowing it to detect any BBs that could be in the chamber, once all BBs are fired, the gun will stop firing and you will need to insert a new magazine then pushing on the functional bolt release to "chamber" a round for it to continue to fire. Do note that you do not need a proprietary magazine to have access to the bolt release and the last round cut-off feature like the Tokyo Marui NGRS system, any M4 / AR-15 style magazine will work just as well.
Speaking of the technicalities, the G&G SGR 556 has a quick detach spring system, allowing you to swap springs on the fly to match different FPS requirements. G&G has installed a new Hop-Up system into this airsoft rifle, all you have to do is to twist the guide rod as if you are adjusting the gas pressure of the rifle, similar to most gas airsoft guns made by VFC. The G&G SGR 556 has a MOSFET that allows you to adjust the pre cocking, trigger travel, 3-round and 5-round burst and it could do an ETU diagnostics, all this can be done with the gun itself or with a provided remote control.
The G3 Gearbox by G&G found in the G&G SGR 556 electric airsoft rifle is a groundbreaking advancement in electric airsoft technology, while it may not have the felt recoil associated with the Tokyo Marui NGRS series or the GBLS DAS system but it has features on par or even better than a Systema PTW for a fraction of the price while removing the need of using proprietary magazines to function or to access all the features this rifle could provide. So, will this revolutionary design finally make the old, expensive Systema PTWs a thing of the past? Only time will tell.
