MDR-X V3
The Desert Tech MDR-X is an acronym for Micro Dynamic Rifle Extreme. This is a relatively new rifle, as it was introduced in 2018 as an attempt to compete in the United States Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon Program trail to replace the standard issues of US Army infantry weapons. Although it lost to the SIG MCX Spear, it still caught a lot of attention in the firearms community, and it is also quite sought after as it is a fully ambidextrous bullpup rifle that can take multiple calibers with ease.
Silverback has dropped its MDRX V3 AEG Airsoft rifle series, and it comes with a boatload of new features and improvements over the older Silverback MDRX iterations. The Silverback MDRX V3 is produced under exclusive license from Desert Tech LLC, featuring fully engraved markings where needed and a unique serial number to distinguish one from another, further adding to the authenticity of the Silverback MDRX. The receiver, outer barrel, and muzzle brake are made using high-grade 6000 series aluminum while PA6 Nylon Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer is used for the stock, grip, and handguard. The handguard on the MDRX has MLOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock position, allowing the user to mount accessories like a laser unit or weapon light for increased weapons capabilities. At the rear of the stock, the MDRX has 2 steel QD mounting points where the user can attach a sling of their choosing. The controls of the MDRX are fully ambidextrous with the fire selector on both sides and the magazine release has 3 release points which are also located on both sides with the 3rd mag release located at the front of the magwell. The aesthetics of the Silverback MDRX V3 is as authentic as you can get when compared to the real-steel version.
Internally, the MDRX V3 features the same unique high-quality gearbox that Silverback developed for the V2 version. Featuring a CNC machined aluminum 26mm wide bore cylinder which is +19% wider than standard AEG cylinders, and a quick-change spring system which can be utilized with the addition 2 springs included in the gun (100% & 80% Newton Spring, in addition to the pre-installed 60% Newton Spring inside the MDRX). The stock cylinder is ventilated with 75% usable air volume (22.5cc) and can be upgraded with Silverback's 100% (30cc) cylinder for a more outdoor capable setup and the CNC aluminum constructed cylinder head has an NBR piston damper and a stainless-steel nozzle installed for increased reliability and durability. The piston assembly is also made using CNC machined aluminum, featuring a ventilated piston head with an FKM o-ring and POM glider ring installed for a tighter air-seal. The piston body features a hardened MIM steel 16-teeth rack that works in tandem with the 18:1 torque up gear set which is also made using MIM steel for increased durability. The ADC 12 aluminum gearbox carter with 10mm ball bearings ensures that the Silverback MDRX cycles smoothly without much resistance. The steel spring guide is equipped with a thrust bearing and uses a 3-lug design which ensures better axial alignment. The gearbox is a "Tappet plate-less" construction which also simplifies the components needed for complete assembly. At the heart of the gun is Silverback's Neodymium high-torque 19000RPM (11.1v) short axis motor, which allows for a snappy trigger response and fast-firing rate!
The Silverback MDRX V3 features a new programmable Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and Electronic Trigger Unit (ETU) and is specifically developed in cooperation with T238. The ECU is designed to operate on 11.1v and 7.4v Li-Po batteries, on 11.1v the trigger response is much snappier and sharp while with the latter, it operates at a steady but respectable rate with little diminishing returns. The ECU also features a gear cycle and fire selector position detection via the integrated Hall Effect sensor, and a programmable shooting mode with modes like burst or binary in addition to the pre-selected standard semi/full auto mode. The ECU is also capable of setting up a simulated DMR cooldown, pre-cocking, sleep mode, and active braking and battery protection, all of which work in tandem with the aforementioned Hall Effect sensor. The MDRX also features mechanical blocking as well as MOSFET temperature safety protection so that in the case of a major malfunction, the gun will lock itself down to protect from further damage. The MDRX V3 also uses the same efficient hop-up design as the V2, with the hop-up unit made of a durable Polycarbonate material. The hop-up unit uses a TDC rotary ring design with incremental "click" adjustments using a ball plunger making adjusting the hop easy due to its tactile feel, with 36 positions ranging from 0 up to 750 micrometers with the low nub (which is pre-installed for standard BB weights), and from 500 up to 1250 micrometers with the high nub (provided for heavier BB weights). Inside the hop-up unit is a 70-degree flat hop bucking which offers excellent traction for both light and heavier BBs out of the box, and a 420mm 6.05 AEG brass inner barrel with chemical passivation surface treatment provides great accuracy over mid-longer engagement distances.
Overall, the Silverback MDRX V3 AEG Airsoft rifle performed great, with the addition of a programmable ECU, the MDRX V3 is able to keep up with different combat scenarios and environments which is reminiscent to the real-steel MDRX! Its modularity and ease of use make this gun a great pick for both beginners and veterans of the sport.
