The M249 light machine gun is the American adaptation of the Belgian FN Minimi, a light machine gun manufactured by the Belgian company FN Herstal. The M249 is a gas operated air cooled belt fed light machine gun chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and is the primary light machine gun of the United States Armed Forces. First introduced in 1984 the M249 has seen action in all US conflicts since the 1991 Gulf War and continues to serve in the US as well as the armed forces of a dozen countries around the world.
