An airsoft grenade launcher is an impressive addition to your arsenal. Chances are you want one because you saw one on your local field, or you’re ready to step up your game when it comes to tagging opponents in a particular area.
Standalone and under-barrel airsoft grenade launchers allow you to integrate this surprise attack into your existing gear or platform. You can also choose from various ammunition/shell types, depending on your local field’s rules surrounding grenade use.
What Is an Airsoft Grenade Launcher?
An airsoft grenade launcher replicates the real-life concept of propelling one or several projectiles simultaneously toward the enemy. You can purchase standalone or under-barrel airsoft grenade launchers.
A standaloneairsoft gas grenade launcher functions similarly to a pistol, while under-barrel grenade launchers mate to your existing airsoft platform below the handguard or on many rail systems. Most airsoft grenade launchers don’t incorporate hop-ups, nozzles, or buckings, but some have o-rings to keep the BBs contained.
Airsoft BBs, foam heads, or rubber slugs represent common airsoft grenade launcher ammunition. Most airsoft grenades rely on a CO2 cartridge or green gas as a propellant. It’s important to abide by the manufacturer’s recommendations when charging airsoft grenades, as using higher-pressure airsoft gas (such as red gas or black gas) can risk the integrity of the internal components.
Players often use airsoft grenade launchers to clear a room or blast at a group of opponents. In most cases, grenade launchers act as a backup weapon that’s called on when there’s nothing else to turn to.
For example, if you run out of ammunition in your sniper rifle, an airsoft launcher can provide the Hail Mary you need to quickly escape. At the end of the day, grenade launchers are just a fun weapon to have and deploy on the field alongside your favorite airsoft rifles.
How Does an Airsoft Grenade Launcher Work?
As the name indicates, airsoft grenade launchers propel projectiles toward the enemy. Each ammunition type will perform in a unique way. For example, TAGinn shells deploy via an airsoft grenade launcher, but these pyrotechnic rounds aren’t allowed on many fields.
The more common (and slightly less impressive) projectile of choice is the BB shower shell. These shells incorporate a gas valve that, when struck by the firing pin, releases CO2 or green gas to propel BBs outward, similar to a shotgun blast, scattergun, or spud launcher. Most BB shower shells look like real 40mm grenades launched from an actual 40mm grenade launcher.
BB shower shell gas grenades are reusable. After you eject the shell from the launcher, simply fill it back up with BBs and the appropriate propellant. Depending on gameplay length, you can use your airsoft grenade launcher and BB shower shell multiple times if you have time and cover to reload.
Rubber slugs and foam heads work in a similar way to BB shower shells, just without the shower of BBs. The airsoft grenade launcher propels these projectiles out of the muzzle, not unlike your average Nerf gun. You can reuse these types of ammunition if you can recover them. Players may also choose to carry multiple grenade rounds in pouches on their airsoft vests or chest rigs.
How To Choose an Airsoft Grenade Launcher
Before you start adding airsoft grenade launchers to your wishlist, carefully read through the rules and regulations of your local airsoft field. Many fields have limitations on what grenades can be used and when. Don’t run the risk of buying an airsoft grenade and grenade launcher you aren’t allowed to use just for it to sit on the shelf.
From there, it’s all about deciding between a standalone version or one that mounts to your existing airsoft gun. The E&C M4 Airsoft AEG Rifle with M203 Grenade Launcher EC701 is an affordable entry-level electric airsoft gun with an under-barrel grenade launcher. However, you can also purchase a standalone grenade launcher, such as the APS THOR PowerUp 40mm Airsoft Grenade Launcher Pistol.
If you’re going for a realistic look, the Deep Fire AT4 Launcher w/ Fiberglass Tube, GK Tactical M72A3 LAW 40mm Grenade Launcher (CNC Aluminum), and the Arrow Dynamic RPG-7 Grenade Launcher (Real Wood Version) fit the bill. These airsoft grenade launchers will have any enemy in sight thinking twice before they engage you as a target. If you’re someone who participates in military-style games, any of these three grenade launchers are a must-have for that authentic look.
Many players also appreciate the dominating presence of the ICSMGL Grenade Launcher (available in black or tan), which is capable of firing up to six shells in sequence. It’s a challenge not to smile as you lay down fire to cover an advance, stall your opponents, and make everyone around you wish they had one just like it.
Showguns also makes the MBT .50 BMG Multiple Bullets Thunder Model Kit and the Mini Hand Cannon Airsoft Grenade Launcher. These grenade launchers resemble airsoft pistols that rest in their holsters, just with different ammo. Suffice it to say if you’re looking for an airsoft grenade launcher that fits your style of gameplay, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from.
What Are Popular Airsoft Grenade Launcher Models?
Many of the most popular airsoft grenade launchers resemble historical real-steel variants. For example, the ARES M320 Grenade Launcher is a German-made grenade launcher designed in 2008. The foregrip and detachable buttstock are two notable features, along with the ability to nestle this launcher directly beneath the barrel of your favorite airsoft gun (including CYMA and Elite Force).
The VFC US SOCOM M3 MAAWS Grenade Launcher is another crowd favorite. At a fraction of the weight of the real thing, the replica of the M3 Recoilless Rifle accepts different VFC ammunition types. A Picatinny optic rail for scopes and flashlights and an aluminum reinforced inner tube contribute to the realistic operation of this airsoft grenade launcher, which (in real-steel variants) was the standard issue for the United States Special Operations Command. The inner barrel also features dummy rifling.
If you’re looking for an airsoft grenade launcher that will impress your friends, the King Arms M79 Sawed Off Grenade Launcher and the Alpha Parts AS-40 Double Barrel 40mm Grenade Launcher are worth a second look. The sawed-off King Arms launcher is a faithful replica that features a break-open barrel operating system and rotating winter trigger guard.
The double-barrel variant from Alpha Parts looks slightly Sci-Fi, but it fires one or both tubes depending on how you pull the trigger. In addition, the Madbull XM203 Long Moscart Launcher (Tan) is a full-metal MOSCART launcher compatible with Madbull’s selection of grenade shells.
Airsoft grenade launchers turn any airsoft game into a simulated combat of epic proportions. You can truly mix and match — within reason — grenade launchers and projectiles to make a statement on your local airsoft field. RedWolf Airsoft stocks the best variety of quality airsoft grenade launchers, projectiles, CO2 or gas, and BBs.
Airsoft grenade launcher
Ever been in an airsoft game when someone shoots at you with one massive spray of BB’s, we are not talking about a stream of BB’s from a gun. More like a tsunami of BB’s coming your way and nowhere to escape! Well, my friend, that is from a gas airsoft grenade launcher which is used mainly for clearing out rooms. But there are some that shoot out large foam or rubber heads so be warned!
These types of guns are used mainly for clearing our rooms or a bunch of unsuspecting people in a skirmish game. So don’t think about using it for long-range combat because by the time the BB’s reach your opposition they’ll be on the floor rolling. It is more of a crowd control weapon so please do keep that in mind if you do want to get a grenade launcher.
What is an airsoft grenade launcher?
This monster of a weapon known as a grenade launcher. In reality, it’s a weapon that fires specially designed large caliber projectiles, often with smoke, gas, or even explosive warheads. But this is airsoft, so the only thing coming out of that grenade launcher are screams of your victims and BB’s! The type that’s the most common is portable, shoulder-fired weapons as there are no bigger ones in airsoft.
Grenade launchers come in the form of attachments mounted to a rifle or standalone weapon which is either single-shot or repeating. To encounter someone using this especially in CQB is a force to reckon with, as it’s impossible to escape what’s coming for you.
What’s known as a grenade shell is where all the action happens every time the grenade launcher is fired. It is a shell with many holes at the front which holds as much as 200 BB’s! To prime this bad boy, all you need to do is load it up with gas at the end of the shell and pop it into a grenade launcher. We have a wide selection of grenade launchers and shells for your needs so be sure to check our store.
What to look for in an Airsoft grenade launcher?
It really depends on what you want, did you want a single-shot or repeating grenade launcher. There are two types of grenade launchers in airsoft which are either standalone or attached. Both have their pros and cons as having a standalone is compact and easy to use compared to an attachment. That being said using an attachment is safer as you’ll always be carrying your primary firearm to protect yourself until the moment you need the big guns. Though if you want a repeating shot grenade launcher it’ll always be a standalone weapon due to its design.
How does an Airsoft grenade launcher work?
They work in a similar way to how gas magazines work except it’s not elongated and thin. An airsoft grenade consists of three areas to understand, a gas reservoir, the BB chambers, and finally valve.
Gas Reservoir
It’s a small space within the shell or grenade that holds the pressurized gas. To charge the grenade up it’s usually done via the fill valve. The grenade is filled with gas in the same way that you would fill a gas pistol or rifle mag. When charging the grenade with gas, make sure you are wearing eye protection, even if the chambers are empty. You never know what kind of things could damage your eyes if accidentally discharged.
BB Chambers
At the front end of the shell or grenade, instead of one BB in the chamber, there can be 20 BBs. But instead of a single chamber, there’s about 10 – an army of 200 BBs ready to cause chaos. Towards the end of the barrels, there’s an O-ring that holds the BBs in place and causes them to spread, much like a hop-up when fired causing a wider spread of BBs.
Valve
At the back of the shell, there’s a large push button that actuates an internal valve. The internal valve opens the gas reservoir and directs pressurized air to the BB chambers. This pressure forces BBs out of the chambers and out towards the enemy in a loud bang! All of the gas within the reservoir is used to propel the BBs. Unlike pistol and rifle gas chambers, which only use a small portion, you need to refill the reservoir (and BB chambers) before next use.
Though in theory, you can use them without a grenade launcher as all you need to activate the shell or grenade is pushing the pressure button at the back. But we don’t recommend you do this, so stay safe and we hope you guys have fun out there.
How Does an Airsoft Grenade Launcher Work?
The name Airsoft Grenade Launcher is a bit of a misnomer because it does not really launch a grenade that explodes unless you use a specific kind of shell called TAGinn that is banned in most countries that do not allow pyrotechnics. How the grenade launcher behaves depends on which shells you use in it.
The magic actually happens in the shell, which is charged with green gas or CO2. There is a valve that, once hit, opens up the entire contents of the gas reservoir and propels either hundreds of BBs, a foam, or rubber head out of the launcher. It works like a spud launcher where a simple gas expansion will push out whatever object is in the barrel.
The function of the launcher is to chamber the shell, and once you pull the trigger, a firing pin strikes the valve on the shell and fires it.
Some launchers take a single shell, while the ICS revolving grenade launcher can take 6 shells and fire them off in sequence as quickly as you can pull the trigger. Some grenade launchers are made to look like rocket launchers, like the AT4, M72 and RPG.
How do Airsoft Grenade Launcher Shells Work?
The most common airsoft grenade shell is also called the BB Shower shell, which essentially behaves like a shotgun. They must be used together with an airsoft gas grenade launcher. The shells are designed to look like 40mm shells, so some refer to these launchers as 40mm airsoft grenade launcher. An internal gas reservoir stores compressed green gas or CO2, and once the firing pin in the launcher strikes the valve on the shell, the gas is released and propels any number of BBs out of the shell in a forward direction. The effect is like a scattergun, or shotgun, where multiple BBs are flying towards your target in a big plume of smoke. Some grenade shells use rubber slugs or foam heads instead of BBs for novelty purposes, although actual flying distance is quite limited.
What is the Best Airsoft Grenade Launcher?
Depending on how you intend to use the grenade launcher, there are several options. But the most popular is the ICS MGL Revolving grenade launcher which allows you to shoot up to 6 shells in rapid sequence. This launcher is available in both black and tan. Another very popular launcher is the ARES M320 40mm Airsoft Grenade launcher, again available in both black and tan.
If you wish to use your airsoft gun with grenade launcher, you can mount an underbarrel grenade launcher. There are many models classified as M203 airsoft launchers that would fit this requirement, and they attach to the underside of your rifle’s front RIS picattinny rail.
You can also opt for a stand alone grenade launcher in the form of a pistol launcher, that can actually be holstered by your side for emergency situations. These airsoft grenade launcher pistols are a lot of fun and can take an opponent by surprise.
There is also a class if launchers called the airsoft mini grenade launcher from SHOWGUNS that does not use a 40mm style shell, but a gas charged shotgun shell instead. Because they use shotgun shells, we do not classify them as launchers, but rather as mini shotguns.
How to Use Airsoft Grenade Launcher?
Grenade launchers are actually better for room clearing or blasting at a group of opponents grouped together. When turning a corner into a room, sending hundreds of BBs flying in will hit any opponents standing around in one go, saving you from having to shoot them one by one and risking yourself getting shot. It’s also a great backup weapon where if your primary weapon malfunctions or you run out of ammunition and are getting charged, a single blast without the need for real aiming can take out any attackers quickly.
Are Airsoft Grenade Launcher Shells Reusable?
The answer depends on the type of shell you are using. If you are using a BB Shower shell that is rechargeable and reloadable, then yes it is reusable. You simply recharge it with green gas or CO2, reload the BBs, and it is ready to fire again. However if you are using shells like the TAGinn expendable shells that explode with powder or pyrotechnics upon impact, those are not reusable. We do not carry any pyrotechnic shells due to local regulations prohibiting the sale of such items. Pyrotechnic and exploding shells are banned in many countries and game sites as well, so check your local laws first.
