The FN SCAR (SOF Combat Assault Rifle) is a family of gas-operated short-stroke gas piston automatic rifles developed by Belgian manufacturer FN Herstal in 2004. Its base concept was to provide a modular system for the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) to satisfy the requirements of the SCAR competition.

In early 2004, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) issued a solicitation for a family of Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifles, the so-called SCAR, designed around two different calibers but featuring high commonality of parts and identical ergonomics. The SCAR system completed low-rate initial production testing in June 2007. After some delays, the first rifles began to be issued to operational units in April 2009, and a battalion of the U.S. 75th Ranger Regiment was the first large unit deployed into combat with 600 of the rifles in 2009.

The U.S. Special Operations Command later cancelled their purchase of the SCAR-L and planned to remove the rifle from their inventory by 2013. However, they will continue to purchase the SCAR-H version, and also plan to purchase 5.56mm conversion kits for the SCAR-H, allowing it to substitute for the SCAR-L. That is where the SCAR MK17 Mod 0 comes into play. Unlike the MK16, the MK17 MOD 0 allows for easy back-and-forth conversions and configurations between 5.56x45mm and 7.62x51mm calibers.

The Renegade Tech SCAR MK17 Mod 0 GBB Airsoft rifle is a premium offering and a true 1:1 replica of the MK17 Mod 0 rifle. Externally, the Renegade MK17 Mod 0 is built with premium materials consisting of CNC-machined 6061 Aluminum for the upper receiver and outer barrel assembly, and impact-resistant nylon polymer for the MOD 0 lower receiver and furniture, like the retractable side folding stock and pistol grip. This gives the rifle an extremely robust, yet lightweight overall profile.

Internally, the gun is equipped with steel components strewn about. The heart of the gun is the WE M4 trigger box, housing a full-steel hammer and trigger assembly. The bolt carrier assembly is also CNC-machined steel and is outfitted with a reinforced nylon polymer feed nozzle. Renegade was also nice enough to include high-performance components out of the box, like the Maple Leaf CNC-machined aluminum hop-up chamber assembly, Maple Leaf 75-degree hop-up bucking, and Unicorn Airsoft 6.03mm precision inner barrel. This gives the rifle an extremely accurate and consistent shooting performance out of the box.

The Renegade SCAR MK17 Mod 0 also comes with 2 magazines: the GHK GMAG V3 gas-powered magazine and a standard GHK Stanag V3 gas-powered magazine, both with a 35-round capacity. Overall, the Renegade SCAR MK17 Mod 0 GBB Airsoft rifle is the first Airsoft replica of the new-generation FN SCAR model, giving it a highly unique place in the Airsoft ecosystem! Shooting the rifle feels good, as the recoil impulse kicks hard and feels stout and snappy, thanks in part to its steel bolt carrier. The cyclic action is smooth and has a respectable rate of fire in full auto. The WE trigger box is surprising to say the least, as the trigger response is tactile and highly responsive. Overall, the Renegade SCAR MK17 Mod 0 GBB Airsoft rifle is a great choice for both beginners and experienced Airsofters alike, especially if you are a SCAR aficionado.

*GHK V3 STANAG Magazines are only available with the first batch. Subsequent batches are to ship with x2 GHK GMAG V3 Gas Airsoft Rifle magazines. Due to the structural differences between the two magazine specs, pushing the STANAG-style magazine beyond its intended insertion depth may place excessive stress on the internal mechanism and damage Part No. 10. Please ensure the magazine is properly seated and avoid excessive insertion force.*
