It was said that 2 muzzle-loaded matchlock arquebuses were purchased from Portuguese sailors on Tanegashima island in Japan in the year 1543. During the Sengoku Jidai or Japanese Warring States period, a potential of arming unskilled conscripts was realized, as it is much easier to train soldiers to fire rifles instead of training to use the Yumi, or a traditional Japanese bow, which could take years to master. It was because of this reason, the Japanese reverse-engineered the purchased Portuguese rifles and have since armed many of the soldiers of different warring states, these rifles will go on to have many names, Hinawajuu, Teppo and of course as the Tanegashima.
The KTW TANEGASHIMA Carbine Air Cocking Rifle is a faithful replica of the of the Tanegashima matchlock arquebus carbine. This variant is much shorter compared to a full size Tanegashima, as the carbine were designed to be used by horseback troops, allowing for easy storage as well as ease of loading. KTW does a great job of replicating the rifle, this gun is made of mostly metal components as well as having a real wood stock. It also features a real wick which you could adjust for length, and to add extra realism, the tip of the wick was slightly burnt from the factory.
To use the rifle, you would first need to remove the mock loading stick, under the muzzle which also act as a magazine for the gun, this magazine will hold 53 rounds. Then, pull the latch under the rifle to cock the gun, after which you would have to cock the cocking lever before firing. Although having a cocking lever under the gun, and having 53 rounds in the magazine may make it unrealistic, but latch is hardly visible for those who don't know where to look, and it would make the gun skirmishable too, if you wish to do so at least, we think this is more of a piece to be hanged on a wall to be admired.
This gun also features adjustable hop-up which is located near the rear sight and can be accessed using a 3M Allen key, KTW has also claimed that to achieve optimal performance, you will have to load the gun with 0.25 gram 6mm BBs.
Fun Fact: a Tanegashima rifle was also featured as a joke gun in the game Metal Gear Solid 4, here is Old Snake reloading one:
