What Is the Barrett 50 Cal Airsoft Gun?
The well-known Barrett 50 caliber rifle is the brainchild of Ronnie Barrett, a man obsessed with building — in his words — the ultimate firearm. Today, his namesake company supplies various groups, from sport shooters to law enforcement agencies. It’s also the inspiration for many 50-caliber airsoft rifles, as with most replicas.
Most Barrett airsoft guns are inspired by the M82, M82A1, M107, and M107A1 real-steel models. The Barrett M82A1 was designed as the first shoulder-fired semi-automatic rifle chambered in 50 BMG or 416 Barrett. Weighing over 32 pounds and 57 inches long, it requires a top Picatinny rail-mounted carrying handle.
The full-metal Barrett M107A1 resembles the M82A1 in length but weighs slightly less, at just under 30 pounds. This semi-automatic rifle is only chambered in 50 BMG, and the rounds feed through a 10-round magazine. Barrett Firearms designed the M107A to accept a suppressor and be lighter, stronger, and more accurate.
The Barrett 50 caliber appears in several forms in the airsoft world, depending on which manufacturer puts its own spin on the beloved icon. Due to its cultural impact, and despite its impracticality on the airsoft field, it’s a popular choice among airsofters.
Although players don’t get to shoot 50-caliber BBs (ouch!), it’s all about the experience. Most of the Barrett 50 caliber airsoft replicas are powered by a spring, a lipo battery, or green gas; high-pressure air (HPA) setups aren’t very common (if they exist at all).
