The Mauser Kar98K (short for Karabiner 98 Kurz, or Karabiner 98K) was Germany’s rifle of choice during the Second World War and continues to dominate modern airsoft fields today.

Add a Kar98K airsoft gun to your collection to make the most of historical reenactments and gameplay. Available models include spring-powered and compressed gas-powered variants from brands like Marushin, Tanaka, Snow Wolf, and ARES.

What is a Kar98K Airsoft Gun?

The Mauser Karabiner 98 Kurz (or Carbine 98 Short) was adopted as Germany’s standard-issue rifle in 1935. An evolution of the Gewehr 98 from the First World War, the Kar98K saw combat through WWII, with over 14.6 million Kar98Ks produced during that time. The Kar98K is characterized by a shorter overall length and redesigned bolt that better suits rapid firing and rifle-mounted optics.

The Kar98K is popular in WWII reenactments, both in real-steel and airsoft versions. The real-steel variant is known for its stability, reliability, and accuracy in a time before the deadly force of machine guns. Many collectors also seek out high-quality Kar98K models as part of global and gun history.

How Does a Kar98K Airsoft Gun Work?

Most Kar98K airsoft guns are either spring-powered or powered by green gas. Spring rifles rely on a compressed spring to provide the pressurized air necessary to push the airsoft BBs down the barrel and out the muzzle.

The bolt-action Kar98K can also be powered by green gas, which even ejects shells in the Marushin Kar98K Shell Ejecting Classic Rifle. Some Kar98K models are also gas blowback (GBB), meaning that part of the gas charge will produce recoil similar to what you’d feel behind a real-steel Kar98K rifle (or GBB airsoft pistols).

What Are Some Popular Kar98K Airsoft Guns

Our YouTube review of the ARES Kar98K Sniper Airsoft Classic Rifle with Scope and Mount (also available without a scope and mount) demonstrates the dedication ARES put into this historical bolt-action airsoft rifle. The real wood and nearly full steel exterior give it that realistic hefty weight, and the scope and trigger actually function. Although the cleaning rod cannot be removed to mount a bayonet, the hop-up adjustment is conveniently located just behind the rear sight.

Marushin produces multiple versions of the Kar98K, each with its own value. The Marushin Mauser Kar98K Airsoft Sniper (6mm Gas Version, Excellent HW) features a beautiful walnut brown wood stock, heavy weight polymer constructed receiver, and a light weathering finish.

Choose the Marushin Mauser Kar98K Sporter version if you’re looking for a shorter variant of this bolt-action rifle with a real wood stock and full metal components. True airsoft enthusiasts will also enjoy the Marushin Kar98K (Shell-Ejecting airsoft replica.

Snow Wolf’s spring-powered Kar98K airsoft sniper rifle also does the German bolt-action platform justice. Tanaka also makes a Kar98K Air - Bolt Action Air Cocking Airsoft Classic Rifle. If you’re looking for a vintage finish, the Tanaka Mauser Kar98K with BYF Version Old Stock Vintage Blue Finish is a must-have for your collection.
