The 10-barreled, hand-driven Gatling gun of the Civil War, capable of shooting 20 rounds per second or up to 1,200 per minute, sparked the desire to send bucket loads of ammo down range toward the enemy. How Does an Airsoft Minigun Work?

Simply put, an airsoft minigun feeds ammo through multiple barrels that rotate as they fire. Yet such an understated explanation glosses over the innovative mechanics and intricate play between an airsoft minigun’s internal components. 

A lot more goes into designing and developing an airsoft minigun than meets the eye. If that’s not enough to convince you, consider how many (or should we say how few) airsoft manufacturers actually produce a minigun platform — and how much they cost. 

Currently, only Craft Apple Works (CAW), Classic Army, and WELL PRO sell airsoft miniguns. CAW sold a few miniguns under the name Echo1 a while back, but the list of manufacturers remains short. And unless you’re an avid airsofter with one of everything in your collection, the price of an airsoft minigun often sits well above most budgets. 

Model specifics will vary, but for all intents and purposes, airsoft miniguns draw power from two lipo batteries or a hybrid combination of a lipo battery and gas, such as CO2 or green gas. 

When using a hybrid power supply, the gas propels the BBs down range, while the lipo battery controls the gun’s other electronic components. It’s important to note that airsoft miniguns will fire BBs even if the batteries are unplugged, so keeping it muzzled with a barrel bag will help reduce any potential arguments or injuries.

How To Upgrade an Airsoft Minigun

Due to their proprietary design, upgrade parts for airsoft miniguns are limited. You won’t need holsters, bipods, backpacks, pistol grips, or shells like you would with airsoft shotguns, gas blowback pistols, or HPA platforms. However, you can upgrade a few components in addition to a solid battery charger.

Since you can access the nozzles and hop-ups for each barrel, swapping them out for an upgraded version can help tighten your shot groups, increase FPS, and better target your opponents. If you’re brave enough to take your minigun apart to access the inner barrels, you can also swap them for tight-bore versions to increase accuracy.
