A standard M16 has a 20 inch barrel while the standard M4A1 has a 14.5 inch barrel but the beauty of the M16 family is their ability to modify the length with a lot more options then that.

This 14.5 Inch (383mm) barrel is dubbed the 'Afghan' barrel, squarely the standard length barrel for the M4A1. At standard barrel length, your M4 pulls off a classic shape and handling characteristics, benchmark performance and of course is easier to shop for inner barrels due to the common length factor.
