Here's an airsoft gun whose existence is ironic.
The Steyr AUG, is arguably the epitome of bullpup rifles, so much so it is the first bullpup rifle that went into widespread use. This rifle is not just adopted in its home country Austria, but also in other countries such as Ireland, Argentina, Morocco, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and many more. In 1985, Australia replaced their M16s and L1A1 (FAL) with the F88 Austeyr which is a licensed copy of the Steyr AUG made by the Australian Defense Industries now Thales Australia at their Lithgow Small Arms Factory. Lithgow then debuted the F90 variant in June 2012 which is an upgrade to their F88 being more modular and is now the standard issue rifle to the Australian military.
The KWA Lithgow Arms F90 GBB Airsoft Rifle is a faithful and licensed replica of the AUG from down under. The F90 that this KWA is based on is the 20-inch variant with a bayonet lug and the longest iteration of the F90 platform. Those who are familiar with the AUG platform will find themselves at home with this rifle and perhaps may find some pleasant surprises, Other than sharing almost the same controls with the AUG, the F90 has a fold-up, low-profile charging handle, something the Australians kept after using the FAL based L1A1 where the charging handle is on the left side may have a tendency of catching on to webbings or MOLLE, unlike the original FAL, the L1A1 charging handle folds forwards and out of the way when not in use, Although, the charging handle on the F90 doesn't fold away when not being used, it does allow you to push it up to a locked position so it would get out of the way when not in use. For those who used the AUG, you might think this may hinder reload speed, but it doesn't, thanks to the bolt lock lever on the F90, allowing you to drop the bolt after a reload without manipulating the charging handle.
Like the AUG, the F90 has an ambidextrous magazine release, safety, and a 2-stage trigger where if you pull it halfway it will fire semi-auto, and pulling it all the way is full auto. Now for those who are going to semi-only skirmishes and don't want to accidentally full auto someone, don't worry as the KWA F90 has an automatic lockout trigger (ALO) that is a pull tab located at the bottom of the trigger that prevents the trigger from fully traveling to automatic fire mode. What is interesting about the KWA F90 gas airsoft rifle is that although there isn't an airsoft grenade launcher for it yet, there is however a slot on the rifle that allows for an SL40 UBGL-style grenade launcher, who knows perhaps KWA might make one in the future, because that would be cool!
The F90 by KWA takes down like the real thing and is similar to the AUG, and you would have to fieldstrip it to access the hop-up unit of the gun. Firing this gun is pleasant, the trigger is squishy but that is expected for a bullpup rifle however it is not as squishy as the Tokyo Marui AUG AEG and it has a blowback similar to the GHK AUG GBB, making the shooting experience of this gun quite nice for what it is. The reload on this is quick, thanks to its bolt release feature that is sorely lacking in the original AUG design, however, the bolt release is located only on the left-hand side of the gun, meaning if you are a lefty, it would be tricky to hit that release lever.
Finally, why is this gun ironic? That is simple, this is an airsoft gun based on an Australian design, unfortunately, if you are an Aussie living in the land down under, tough luck mate as Australia banned airsoft. Press F to pay respects.
