An airsoft Colt Python is a spring-powered or compressed gas-powered airsoft revolver. Airsoft replicas of the well-known revolver make their presence known on the airsoft field, with plenty of fun mixed in.
Several editions of the Colt Python revolver exist in the airsoft world from brands like Tokyo Marui, Airsoft Surgeon, SRC, Wingun, and Tanaka Works.
What Is a Colt Python?
The real-steel Colt Python has appeared in several films (John Wick, American Gangster, The Departed, and Hostage) and TV series (The Walking Dead, Fargo, and Stranger Things). This legendary revolver starred in many Western flicks and lays claim to a strong cult following. Colt’s Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut, first manufactured the Colt Python in 1955, and it’s been an icon ever since.
The Colt Python is a double-action .357 Magnum caliber revolver. Known for its power and accuracy, it was intended for the premium revolver market segment. The smooth trigger pull and tight cylinder lock-up indicate the level of artistry that goes into each Colt revolver.
Within the airsoft community, the Colt Python enjoys widespread support from both manufacturers and players. The Python can be used as a primary or secondary weapon, depending on your style of play. This Colt revolver can be relatively heavy compared to other lightweight pistols (such as the Tokyo Marui Hi-Capa variants), so it’s worth investing in a holster or figuring out how to carry it on your chest rig or plate carrier.
How Does a Colt Python Work?
As a semi-automatic revolver, the Colt Python holds its ammunition (airsoft BBs) in a revolving six-shell cylinder. As you shoot the Python, the cylinder rotates to present another round until you run out of ammo (similar to any real-steel revolver). Airsoft revolvers like the Colt Python do require some shooting skill, but they’re great fun on the airsoft field.
The Colt Python comes in two forms: spring or compressed gas. Spring-powered Colt Python revolvers work like your typical airsoft springer, with manual cocking required before you can take a shot. However, spring Colt Pythons aren’t necessarily as popular as CO2 or green gas variants.
In many ways, it’s with compressed gas that the airsoft Colt Python truly comes alive. Using either green gas or CO2 gas, these gas blowback (GBB) revolvers have a smooth and responsive trigger. CO2 versions are slightly more powerful, with higher muzzle velocities that lend themselves to open-area battles or slightly longer distances.
Note that Colt Pythons are separate from your typical airsoft pistol (like Glocks and Tokyo Marui Hi-Capas), grenade launchers, submachine guns (SMGs), HPA airsoft guns, and airsoft rifles. While these airsoft revolvers may have pistol grips, they’re characterized by the rotating cylinder instead of a gearbox like you’d find on an airsoft automatic electric gun (AEG).
How To Choose a Colt Python
Since the Colt Python is such an iconic platform, several airsoft manufacturers have spun it in many different ways.
Slick tactical variants like the SRC Titan CO2 Colt Python 6-inch Revolver incorporate a Picatinny rail, while the Tanaka Colt Python .357 Magnum R-Model 6-Inch Heavy Weight Gas Airsoft Revolver features plastic grips made to resemble real wood. Stubbier versions, such as the KWC Python 357 (ABS Version, 4-inch, Silver), mirror that classic polished revolver look.
A Colt Python makes a solid backup sidearm if you primarily run an airsoft sniper rifle. However, if you plan on using your new airsoft Colt Python in close-quarters battle (CQB), check the rules and regulations of your local airsoft field. Some Pythons can be too powerful for indoor or CQB-style gameplay.
When choosing your Colt Python, you won’t necessarily need to worry about hop-ups, buckings, inner barrels, or some of the other components you’d find on your typical airsoft gun. Though flashlights can help startle your opponents, you’ll mostly use the front and rear sights to aim, rather than any kind of scope.
