The rapid-fire real-steel Mauser M712 machine pistol may have replaced the Model 1896 “Broomhandle” pistol, but both are dutifully replicated in the airsoft world. Customized M712 gas-powered airsoft pistols can be found on many airsoft fields as primary and backup weapons.

Players can choose from various historic and futuristic Mauser M712 airsoft pistols from brands like WE, Marushin, and KWC.

What Is the Mauser M712?

The Mauser M712 “Schnellfeuer” (rapid-fire) machine pistol debuted in the early 1930s. A successor to the Mauser Model 1896, dubbed the “Broomhandle,” the M712 selective-fire pistol featured full-auto capabilities, a detachable magazine, a 50-1,000-meter rear sight, and a shoulder stock.

Between 1930 and 1931, Mauser produced roughly 4,000 M712 models in Germany, most of which were shipped to China to compete with Spanish brand Astra for popularity among the Chinese.

Although the Broomhandle pistol (also known as the Mauser C96) saw action in the First World War, the Mauser Schnellfeuer pistol would be the weapon of choice for the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS. Karl Westinger designed an improved version of the M712 in 1932. The Broomhandle Mauser and the M712 share similar characteristics, and distinguishing between the two requires scrutinizing the selector switch.

In the airsoft world, the Mauser M712 is faithfully replicated by many brands, including A!CTION, AW Custom, Blackcat Airsoft, KWC, Marushin, and WE. This replica is characterized by a high rate of fire. Many airsoft players choose the M712 for its airsoft pistol platform, which can be shouldered with a detachable stock.

How Does the Mauser M712 Work?

RedWolf carries a variety of gas-powered Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer airsoft pistols. Green gas-powered M712 pistols use green gas to fire, while CO2-powered M712s require CO2. Gas blowback (GBB) and CO2 models offer realistic recoil for a more realistic gaming experience.

Like many gas airsoft pistols (such as Glock or Hi-Capa), the airsoft Schnellfeuer machine pistol draws green gas or CO2 from the magazine through a valve. The air charge sends the BBs down range. As the gas charge depletes, the velocity (measured in feet per second, or FPS) drops accordingly.

What Are Some Popular Mauser M712 Models?

The WE Mauser M712 Green Gas Airsoft Pistol features a full metal body with plastic grips. The detachable plastic stock allows players to shoulder the M712 or run it as a pistol. Semi-automatic and full-auto capabilities make this faithful replica a joy to fire, especially with the satisfying recoil impulse. The M712 also features a long inner barrel for improved accuracy.

Star Wars fans will enjoy the AW Custom M712 Star Wars Style w/ Scope & Flash Hider GBB Airsoft Pistol, which replicates the gun used by Han Solo. This full-metal GBB airsoft pistol also locks back when you run out of ammo. Full-auto and semi-auto firing modes make it a ton of fun on the airsoft field.

The A!CTION Mauser C96 Red9 BBM Model Gun makes a great historical prop if you want a non-firing BB gun. Carbine fans will appreciate the WE M712 GBB Airsoft Carbine - Black (No Marking Version). If you want a shiny metal finish, the Marushin Mauser M712 Gas Airsoft Pistol (6mm) will dazzle your opponents even in the holster. Marushin also offers the M712 Silver Normal Barrel Green Gas Airsoft Pistol and a short-barreled version.
