The name was derived from gille, the Gaelic for servant, in English especially used to refer to those assisting in deer hunting, deer stalking or fly fishing expeditions in the Scottish Highlands. A Ghillie suit is exactly that, a type of camouflage clothing designed to resemble heavy foliage to assist hunters and snipers by blending into their surroundings and conceal themselves from enemies or targets.
The suit gives the wearer's outline a three-dimensional breakup, rather than a linear one. When manufactured correctly, the suit will move in the wind in the same way as surrounding foliage. The best suit is hand made by the shooter who intends to use it but of course hunters and Airsofters alike are not the full-time predatory type to warrant this level of dedication and so a commercial version is the time-economical alternative. Fidragon gives us not one but two different models of Ghillie suit each in large and medium variant sizes. Both models are net-materials with added stands of colored texture fiber strands and braids to create a simplistic multi-layered mass of threading.
The Desert version is a simpler two (and a half) color version consisting mostly of a plain, basic canvas beige with a hint of foliage green here and there to brake up the dryness of the color blend. . The so called half color is the slightly cooler tint of ranger green of the base netting material; so minor is its contribution to the overall look though, it is hardly worth mentioning as it can only be seen from point blank range. The tufts of materials are highly ragged and self-adhering through friction to the point of moving in a massed but changing function to break up the human profile three dimensionally.
The suits are bundled with a sealed bag of fire retardant powder. Instructions are contained within on how to apply the powder to the suit material (dissolve in hot water, soak and allow drying). Having done so, the suit will gain additional resistance to catching fire although care should still be taken when handling such a highly fibrous, aerated fabric. Of course the suit should also be kept clean and dry in storage to avoid infestation of parasites and insects.
